Julie E. Richards raises German shepherd dogs in Marshall, Michigan, operating under the kennel name Alta-Tollhaus, located in southwest Michigan not far from Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The program is built on West German herding bloodlines, selected for correct structure, working drive, and sound, social temperament.

Health testing is a core part of the breeding program. Foundation females carry at minimum the German A-Stamp hip and elbow certification or OFA clearance from dysplasia, SV conformation ratings, and titles in Schutzhund/IPO/IGP or herding. All dogs are also tested for degenerative myelopathy (DM). When a suitable mate cannot be found domestically, Richards has traveled to Germany to maintain those standards.

The dogs live in the home on 108 acres, giving them room to run and explore alongside secure outdoor yards and runs. Puppies are raised on a raw diet and handled regularly by visitors to support early socialization. Alta-Tollhaus German shepherd dogs in Michigan have gone on to compete and work across a wide range of disciplines, including obedience, agility, tracking, conformation, herding, Schutzhund, search and rescue, and service roles such as therapy, autism assistance, and Leader Dogs for the Blind.
