Hubbert Farms

Hubbert Farms raises alpacas in Peterborough, Ontario, situated in the Kawartha Lakes region about an hour northeast of the Greater Toronto Area. Kathy McConnell and her partner Larry Hubbert established the farm in 2002 on a historic rural property that had been in Kathy's family since 1928, when her grandparents William and Florence Steinkrauss received it as a wedding gift and worked it for over three decades.

The farm began with beef cattle, horses, and pigs before Larry and Kathy shifted their focus to alpacas following the BSE challenges of the early 2000s. Starting with just four females, the herd grew considerably over the years to include both suri and huacaya breeds. Hubbert Farms has competed at events including the Eastern Canadian National Alpaca Select Sale and Futurity, Alpaca Ontario Show, and the Alpaca Canada Futurity, earning awards in both suri and huacaya categories. The farm also holds approval from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as a quarantine facility for the import and export of alpacas. Boarding and breeding services round out the operation, and Kathy is known among fellow farmers as a willing resource for herd health and husbandry questions.
