Horse Mountain Alpacas
Horse Mountain Alpacas has been raising huacaya alpacas in Loma, Colorado since 2004, making it one of the longer-running alpaca operations on the Western Slope. The farm sits in the Grand Valley, roughly 20 miles west of Grand Junction, and was started by Danny and Leah Reynolds when they sought a sustainable use for their acreage.
The herd numbers around 30 huacaya alpacas, and fiber quality is the defining focus of the program. Every May the entire herd is shorn, and fleeces are sorted by color and graded for fineness before being processed into yarn, roving, and finished goods. Those searching for huacaya alpacas for sale in Colorado will find a program where the animals are selected with close attention to fleece characteristics.
Many animals in the herd are show-ribbon holders or descend from notable bloodlines, including Snowmass genetics and other well-regarded Peruvian and Accoyo lines. Fiber from the herd is micron-tested seasonally, and the farm operates an on-site store featuring products made directly from its own fleeces.
