Hope Refuge Farm

Hope Refuge Farm, Dexter cattle, Manchester, KY, is nestled in Clay County and the Appalachian foothills near Lexington. Jeff Newswanger has spent more than a decade raising Dexter cattle and follows guidelines set by national breed associations, including routine health testing and genetic screening.

Beginning as a small homestead project, the farm integrates cover crops and rotational grazing to improve soil health. The herd grazes on rotational pastures across the farm’s rolling hills, with calves socialized from birth in a family-centered environment. The farm maintains low-stress handling practices and provides sheltered loafing areas that mimic natural herd dynamics.

As a heritage breed, Dexter cattle suit small-scale farms, and Hope Refuge Farm offers naturally lean, grass-finished beef. Their steers demonstrate consistent growth and docile temperaments, making them valued additions to both homestead and small-scale commercial operations. Many of the herd’s cows also produce creamy milk suitable for small-batch cheese or family use, reflecting the breed’s dual-purpose history.
