Hol Highlands

Hol Highlands Scottish highland cattle are raised in Drakesville, IA, southeast Iowa near Burlington. Brian Hol oversees every aspect of herd health and nutrition, following American Highland Cattle Association guidelines and ensuring core screenings for bovine viral diarrhea and Johne’s disease. Hol Highlands has developed the herd over the past several years, registering each animal to maintain clear lineage records.

The animals graze on native pastures with a rotational grazing system and have access to a sheltered barn, where calves are handled gently to support a calm demeanor. Calves remain with their dams through the spring months to foster strong immunity and social bonds. The farm’s roots in this community extend over multiple generations of local farmland, shaping a thoughtful approach to land stewardship and animal welfare. Many of their cattle have been noted for strong maternal instincts and consistent temperament at area livestock exhibitions. They also incorporate sustainable practices such as composting manure to enrich pasture soils.
