Highline Trail Llamas, run by Albert Ellis out of Boulder, Wyoming, focuses on classic Ccara llamas — the short-wooled, working type originally developed for carrying loads across the Andes. Boulder sits in Sublette County at the foot of the Wind River Mountains, roughly an hour south of Jackson, putting the ranch in some of the most demanding backcountry terrain in the American West.

The program's core aim has been to locate and preserve the remaining bloodlines of the original pack llama at a time when those genetics have become increasingly rare. One notable aspect of the operation is the approach to intact males. Rather than routine gelding, the ranch has moved away from the practice after observing that intact males tended to maintain sound pasterns well into their late teens, while gelded counterparts often required early retirement. The herd has historically run groups of twelve to twenty intact males, and the animals are conditioned through real trail work in the high-altitude mountains of western Wyoming. Highline Trail Llamas has also been a member of the Rocky Mountain Llama and Alpaca Association since 2005, reflecting a long-standing connection to the broader working-llama community.
