High Desert Aussies, run by Johanna out of Bend, Oregon, has been breeding full-size, pedigreed Australian shepherds for more than 30 years under both AKC and ASCA registration. Situated in Central Oregon roughly an hour from Redmond, the program draws families looking for Australian shepherd puppies in Oregon who want a dog oriented toward companionship, service work, and sport rather than traditional herding.

Johanna came to breeding with a background as a veterinary technician, and that experience shapes how the program approaches canine health. Breeding stock undergoes an extensive panel of genetic health testing — covering conditions such as MDR1, PRCD, HSF4, SOD1, and several others — alongside OFA hip and elbow evaluations using PennHIP methodology. Genetic health, disposition, and conformation are the primary selection criteria, with coat color treated as a secondary consideration.

Litters are whelped inside the family home, and puppies spend their earliest weeks there as well, surrounded by the family on a daily basis. Females are limited to four or five litters over their lifetime, after which they are typically placed in pet homes. The program breeds exclusively standard-size Aussies across all four accepted AKC/ASCA color patterns, with an emphasis on producing dogs that excel in obedience, agility, therapy work, and family life.
