High Country Alpaca Ranch
High Country Alpaca Ranch, run by John Fifield, has been raising alpacas in Fence Lake, New Mexico since 2009. The ranch sits in west central New Mexico at an elevation of 7,560 feet, surrounded by pinon pine and juniper, roughly 58 miles south of Grants along the I-40 corridor — making it one of the more remote alpaca operations in the region.
The herd got its start in October 2009 with the purchase of 13 females and 5 males from a Colorado farm, along with a pair of seasoned Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs that had already been living with the alpacas for years. Those guardian dogs remain central to the ranch's operation today, raised from birth alongside the alpacas, barn cats, and free-range chickens to reinforce natural bonding and herd protection instincts.
The barn, pastures, and paddocks were purpose-built with both animal husbandry and human interaction in mind. For anyone researching alpacas for sale in New Mexico, the ranch operates as a full-time livestock operation, not a hobby farm — every aspect of the setup reflects a commitment to hands-on, year-round animal care developed over more than fifteen years on the land.
