Hansen Retrievers raises English Labrador retriever puppies in the Salida area, situated in California's Central Valley near Modesto. Owner Michelle Hansen focuses the program on producing family companions, with an emphasis on temperament and socialization from the earliest weeks of life.

Breeding dogs are selected for both health and disposition. All dogs undergo orthopedic screening for hip and elbow evaluations as well as genetic testing through panels such as Embark and Animal Genetics. Dogs carrying any genetic variants that could affect offspring are only paired with clear mates, so puppies are not at risk of being affected.

Puppies are raised in a home environment alongside other dogs and are introduced to a broad range of sounds, surfaces, environments, and handling from a very young age. The program includes structured desensitization to everyday stimuli and weekly handling exercises designed to build touch tolerance. Around six to seven weeks, each pup receives a temperament evaluation to help match individual personalities to the right family.
