Green Mountain Red Angus
Green Mountain Red Angus has been producing registered red angus cattle from its ranch in Three Forks, Montana for more than 40 years. The operation sits about 25 miles west of Bozeman, in the Gallatin Valley, with a summer ranch on the Bozeman Pass where the herd grazes through the warmer months.
Bob and Julie Morton, both Montana State University graduates in agricultural and animal science fields, run the ranch as a family operation. Their son Tom, who earned a degree in livestock management from MSU, has returned to work alongside them. The herd currently numbers around 230 head of registered 1A red angus.
The program's core philosophy centers on the female, selecting for balanced traits across the entire animal rather than emphasizing any single characteristic. Modern genetic tools, including the most current EPD data available through the Red Angus Association of America, guide sire selection alongside strict culling practices. Green Mountain Red Angus began selling bulls by private treaty in 1988 and has hosted a live on-ranch bull sale since 2000, making red angus bulls and females available to commercial producers across the region each year.
