Gray Owl Farms

Gray Owl Farms has been raising registered Scottish highland cattle in east central Minnesota since its first herd delivery in December 2005, growing from an initial five cows to a herd of more than 60 animals of various ages and colors. The farm sits within the St. Croix River valley northeast of Rush City, roughly an hour north of the Twin Cities, on 614 acres that the family has held for generations — land that once operated as a gravel mining operation for nearly a century before transitioning to agriculture.

The herd was built through deliberate selection of foundation stock from several well-regarded highland programs, including Schön Boden Farms, Wadsworth Farms, Dundonald Farm, Glen Haven Farm, Trafalgar Square Farm, and Drover Hill Farm. Two herd sires with champion backgrounds anchor the breeding program, producing offspring whose performance traits reflect their lineage throughout the herd.

Highland cattle for sale in Minnesota from Gray Owl Farms are raised as a fully natural, grass-fed, grass-finished cow-calf operation — no hormones, antibiotics, or grain. All hay fed through the winter months is grown on the property itself. Calves are halter broken early and managed with hands-on handling in a low-stress environment, which the farm credits for producing animals with even temperaments suited to show, breeding stock, and beef production alike.
