Gill Red Angus

Gill Red Angus has been raising red Angus cattle outside Timber Lake, South Dakota since 1979, when Larry Gill made the trip south to acquire the operation's first registered cows. The ranch sits in the open pasture country of north central South Dakota, roughly 34 miles west of Mobridge and about 120 miles south of Bismarck, North Dakota — a region where cattle have to earn their keep year-round.

Larry and his wife Janet built the cowherd around maternal and performance traits from the start, a focus the operation has carried forward across generations. Today the ranch is run by Bryan and Kristen Gill along with Bryan's brother Brent and his wife Emily, while Larry and Janet remain connected to the place they built. Bryan grew up doing everyday ranch work and took on breeding decisions, marketing, and registration responsibilities after high school.

The program spans a combination of owned and rented pasture ground, and the cattle are selected to thrive on range with minimal intervention while still performing efficiently on feed. AI programs support both the spring and fall calving herds. Gill Red Angus is a registered member of the Red Angus Association of America and offers red Angus bulls and commercial heifers for sale in South Dakota through two annual sales. What began as roughly 50 bulls sold per year in the 1990s has grown to more than 300 annually, with cattle going to buyers across the Northern Plains and as far as the East Coast.
