Giefer Ranch

Giefer Ranch has been raising purebred red Angus cattle in WaKeeney, Kansas, since 1999, when the herd began with the purchase of a single bull and heifer. Located in the High Plains of northwest Kansas, roughly two hours from Salina, the ranch built its cowherd from that original nucleus and has maintained a closed cowherd since 2002.

Selection priorities at Giefer Ranch center on calving ease, low birth weight, and longevity, with EPD emphasis on high CED, low birth weight, and high STAY. The program also targets low maintenance energy, a practical reflection of the demanding High Plains environment where these cattle must forage stockpiled grass through mid-February before supplemental hay is introduced ahead of calving. The ranch calves on green grass in May and uses fenceline weaning to reduce stress on both dam and calf.

Bull development follows a deliberate slow-growth philosophy, with yearling bulls moved to pasture after their first winter and raised on a measured ration designed to protect structural soundness and long-term fertility.
