Fortner Families

Fortner Families raises pugs and chihuahuas in Abilene, Kansas, a small city in the heart of central Kansas about an hour east of Salina. The program was founded by Jenina Hunt-Fortner, whose background includes a degree in veterinary technology, certification as a Companion Animal Hygienist, and certification as a Master Groomer, along with decades of hands-on experience in veterinary clinics and animal care.

The operation is a true family endeavor, with adult children carrying on the same genetic lines Jenina developed over more than 36 years of breeding. Each family member raises only a small number of litters per year, and all pups are raised inside the home, underfoot and alongside children, with daily socialization built into the routine. The ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) method is used from birth to help puppies develop into stable, well-adjusted companions.

Health testing is a consistent part of the program. Breeding dogs are evaluated through OFA certifications, DNA testing, and additional screenings, with preliminary testing done on younger dogs before full OFA certification becomes available.
