Dartmoor Retrievers

Dartmoor Retrievers, based in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, breeds yellow, black, and chocolate Labrador retrievers with a dual focus on working ability and family temperament. Owner Paul Botelho holds AKC Breeder of Merit status and keeps litter numbers intentionally small each year to prioritize the health and trainability of each puppy.

The program sits along the South Coast of Massachusetts, roughly 15 miles south of New Bedford, in a part of the state with a strong tradition of waterfowl and upland hunting. Paul has finished over 70 Master hunters and actively campaigns dogs in both AKC field trials and AKC hunt tests, a level of field credential that sets the breeding stock apart from many Labrador retriever breeders in Massachusetts.

Beyond the kennel, Paul offers obedience and field training services, including boarding and training, drop-in sessions, and competition handling. His training approach emphasizes skill and timing rather than force, following the Barbara Woodhouse method. Whether a puppy is headed into the field, the hunt test ring, or a family living room, the goal is a dog that is steady, biddable, and genuinely easy to live with.
