Cutwater Portuguese Water Dogs

Cutwater Portuguese Water Dogs has been breeding portuguese water dogs in Chester, Connecticut since 1986, making it one of the longer-running programs of its kind in the state. Owner Jane Harding purchased her first PWD in 1984 and has spent four decades developing a line that competes and titles across multiple disciplines.

The kennel's track record in both conformation and performance is well documented. Harding has bred over 150 champion dogs and more than 80 performance-titled dogs, with many dogs earning dual titles in conformation and performance events. Cutwater has placed in the PWDCA's Top Ten Breeders rankings for eight out of ten consecutive years and was named PWDCA Breeder of the Year in 2008 and 2009. The program is also noted for producing dogs that have competed at the AKC Agility Invitational, including the distinction of being the only portuguese water dog breeder to have had two dogs win the number-one working dog title at that event.

Health testing is a stated priority of the program. Breeding stock is evaluated using OFA hip ratings, and the program has worked over multiple generations to reduce dysplasia rates. Structural and temperament evaluations are also conducted on puppies before placements are made.

Harding is president of the Nutmeg Portuguese Water Dog Club and a long-standing member of the PWDCA.
