Crooked Creek Border Collies
Crooked Creek Border Collies raises border collies in Cissna Park, Illinois, a small farming community in east central Illinois, roughly an hour south of Kankakee. JoEllyn Verkler, who runs the program, came to the breed through family roots: she was born and raised on an Angus beef cattle farm in the area, where border collies were kept as working dogs and companions, and her mother raised the breed for many years.
Before turning to border collies, Verkler spent eleven years raising Pembroke Welsh corgis, and that hands-on small-dog experience informs how she approaches her current program. The dogs live in her home and have the run of an eleven-acre mini farm alongside five horses, giving them a true rural upbringing rather than a kennel environment. All dogs in the program have undergone genetic testing through Paw Print Genetics and have tested clear on the full border collie panel, which covers hereditary abnormalities specific to the breed. Families looking for border collie puppies in Illinois from health-tested lines will find that this program is grounded in both agricultural tradition and a deliberate commitment to genetic health.
