Chestnut Oak Farm

Chestnut Oak Farm, owned by Scott and Wendy Rager, has been raising Gypsy vanners in Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania, since the program took shape in the mid-2000s. The farm sits in central Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Harrisburg, on 65 acres that have been in the Rager family for generations as a former dairy operation.

Scott and Wendy established the breeding program in 2002 after discovering the gypsy vanner breed, and they have worked to carry forward the careful, hands-on stewardship their grandparents practiced on the same land. The 1840s bank barn was renovated into an 11-stall horse facility with three spacious birthing stalls, a large tack room, a heated lounge, and updated windows for natural light and ventilation — much of the restoration work done by Scott himself.

The program centers on GVHS-registered gypsy vanner stock, with a focus on correct conformation, tractable temperaments, and strong movement suitable for both the show ring and everyday riding. Foals are imprinted at birth and handled daily, receiving age-appropriate training from the start. The farm's stallions carry deeply rooted bloodlines — including lines tracing to The Bishop and foundation-era imports — and the Ragers also breed drum horses alongside their vanners. Horses from Chestnut Oak have placed in USDF dressage competition and taken multiple halter championships at regional shows, reflecting the farm's interest in demonstrating versatility across disciplines.
