Chakana Sky Alpacas

Chakana Sky Alpacas has been raising huacaya alpacas in Chester, Connecticut since 2016, when William and Janet Bernhart started the farm with a small founding herd of fiber males and maiden females. Chester sits in the Connecticut River Valley, about 25 miles south of Middletown and within easy reach of the shoreline communities of the Lower Connecticut River region.

The farm's guiding philosophy is rooted in three words — heritage, harmony, and sanctuary — reflecting a commitment to honoring the Andean origins of the animals, living in balance with the surrounding land and its wildlife, and providing a refuge for alpacas in need. The name itself traces to 2015, when the Bernharts looked across their hillside property and drew inspiration from the chakana, an ancient Incan symbol representing balance and the connection of all things.

Fiber production is central to the program. The herd's fleece is carefully skirted and sorted, with prime blanket fiber processed into yarn locally in Connecticut through a small regional mill. The farm also participates in the New England Alpaca Fiber Pool, contributing to a broader network of fiber producers across the region.
