Campbell Red Angus
Campbell Red Angus has been raising red angus cattle near McIntosh, South Dakota since 1973, making it one of the longest-running registered red angus programs in the Northern Plains. The ranch sits in the Missouri River country of north-central South Dakota, roughly 30 miles southeast of Mobridge.
Robert Campbell, along with his son Robby, carries on a multi-generational family tradition that his late father Harold and uncle Harvey established when they brought their first purebred cattle into the program in 1973. Robert's parents were also instrumental in founding the South Dakota Red Angus Association and helping establish the breed's recognition in the region during the 1970s and 1980s.
The herd is managed under commercial ranch conditions, with a strong emphasis on nutrition. The operation uses an organic trace mineral program and incorporates Alltech yeast technology into the winter feeding regimen for both the cow herd and developing bulls and heifers. The focus across generations has remained consistent: producing cattle that perform for the cattlemen who buy them, with an emphasis on good feet, sound udders, and reliable production. Campbell Red Angus received the Red Angus Association of America's 2024 Pioneer Breeder of the Year Award, recognizing more than five decades of contribution to the red angus breed in South Dakota and beyond.
