Black Iron Boerboels

Black Iron Boerboels raises South African boerboels on a working farm in Indiana, about an hour north of Indianapolis, under the care of owner Shelby Flynn. The program draws on nearly four decades of dog breeding experience, with the boerboel becoming a central focus after the kennel's first purchase of the breed in 2014.

Dogs at Black Iron are SABBS and AKC registered, and all breeding animals are fully health tested, with OFA records in the database stretching back 35 years across the kennel's breeding history. The operation also runs an on-site fertility lab capable of progesterone testing, transcervical implants, semen storage, and ultrasounds. Litters are produced seasonally, with the majority born in the late fall and winter months, and placement is treated as a deliberate process with attention to matching puppies to appropriate homes.

The breeding focus centers on health and function together, with particular attention to working ability, stamina, and athleticism alongside true boerboel temperament. Those priorities show in the pedigrees: the kennel is home to Klein Sandfontein Judge, who held the highest SABBS linear appraisal score for a male boerboel globally from 2017 to 2024, and Black Iron Bentley, who currently holds that distinction at 93.8 percent. Black Iron is also the founding organizer of the Boerboel Expo, the largest boerboel-focused event in North America, running since 2018.
