Black Hills Highlands

Black Hills Highlands raises registered Scottish Highland cattle in Spearfish, South Dakota, where the northern Black Hills meet the open prairie, roughly an hour north of Rapid City. The operation is led by Craig L, a retired wildlife biologist, whose background shapes nearly every aspect of how the fold is managed.

The ranch's approach to raising Highland cattle for sale in South Dakota is grounded in a conservation ethic: intensive rotational grazing and grazing selection training are used to benefit native grasses and forbs while reducing nonnative and invasive species. Over 40 species of native plants are being established across the property in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund, and portions of former agricultural land are being converted back to native grassland.

The breeding program itself is guided by a commitment to preserving heritage traits, selecting for body confirmation, coat color, horn quality, sturdy feet, tight udders, maternal characteristics, and coat length. Females are matched with champion males sourced from the United States, Canada, and Scotland, with a particular preference for bloodlines that trace back to the earliest Scottish Highland cattle introduced to South Dakota — a lineage with deep roots in the state, as the first registered Highlands in the country formed a fold near Belvidere, SD, not far from this ranch.
