Axtell Cattle Company
Axtell Cattle Company raises registered red Angus cattle in Anton, Colorado, roughly 90 miles east of Denver in the short grass country of eastern Colorado. Brian and Jamie Jo Axtell, along with Vaughn and Joyce Axtell, have been building the operation since Brian started with a single registered red Angus heifer in 1997, eventually growing into a full-time program with a capacity of around 250 head.
The herd's foundation traces to Beckton, Boot Jack, and Buffalo Creek genetics, with BJR Gambler 027, a bull purchased in 2001, appearing throughout most of the pedigrees. More recent additions draw from Beeby Red Angus and Ohlde Cattle Company lines, keeping the overall herd as an outcross to much of the breed.
Selection at Axtell is driven by how cattle perform in a low-input, range environment rather than by EPDs or pedigree alone. Feet, udder quality, and disposition are the hard culling criteria, and replacement heifers are raised on summer grass without preferential treatment. The result is a red Angus for sale in Colorado that customers consistently describe as moderate-framed, easy-calving, and structurally sound — traits the operation has refined across more than two decades of consistent culling. Yearling bulls and both commercial and registered heifers have been offered at an annual production sale since the early 2000s, with a customer base that now spans multiple states.
