Austerlitz German Shepherds
Austerlitz German Shepherds has been producing German shepherd dogs in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, near Tulsa, since 1990. Susanne Shelton, an AKC Breeder of Merit and certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA), founded the program and has built it across more than 30 years and seven generations of home-bred mother and sire lines.
The program was shaped by Susanne's early dogs, whose moderate structure, sound temperament, and robust health she set out to preserve as the breed trended toward more extreme physical and behavioral traits elsewhere. After more than 25 years of involvement in sport and conformation, the kennel shifted its focus entirely to breeding German shepherd dogs suited for life as companions in modern households, guided by the FCI breed standard. Health testing on breeding stock is documented through OFA certification and Embark DNA results.
All dogs at Austerlitz are raised inside the home rather than in a kennel, which means each puppy is socialized to everyday domestic life before placement. The puppy-raising protocol is evidence-based and covers cleanliness training, crate conditioning, sleep training, and basic manners. Families looking for a German shepherd dog breeder in Oklahoma with a multi-generational, companion-focused program will find this one among the longer-running in the region.
