Akuna Matada Suri Alpacas raises suri alpacas on a ranch in Hotchkiss, in the North Fork Valley of western Colorado, roughly an hour southeast of Grand Junction. Doug and Debbie Christner have been building their herd since 2005, with a program centered on producing suri alpacas for sale in Colorado and beyond.

The operation's focus is fiber quality first. Rather than selecting animals by appearance alone, the Christners rely on objective measurement tools including histograms, skin biopsies, and SHIP (Suri Herd Improvement Program) to evaluate and improve their herd, with the stated goal of producing uniform, dense, and grade-appropriate fleece suited to a U.S. commercial fiber market.

Debbie Christner has been deeply involved with the Suri Network, serving on its board for several years and heading the Product Development Committee, during which time she helped produce an educational video series for the industry. She has also taken fiber coursework through the University of North Carolina and completed grading, sorting, and mill-tour training to strengthen her understanding of the full fiber supply chain. The ranch's fiber program extends to a partnership with a family-run weaving company that produces hand-knotted rugs from suri fiber, a distinctive dimension of the operation that reflects how seriously the Christners approach the end use of their animals' fleece.
