A Simpler Time - Alpacas & Mill has been raising alpacas in El Cajon, California, on the outskirts of San Diego, since the year 2000, when Dave and Barbara Davies started the ranch with just four animals. The herd has since grown to more than 30 alpacas, with a particular focus on black and grey colorways, though animals across the full color spectrum are part of the program.

Fiber quality is the central emphasis of the operation. The ranch maintains an on-site mini mill that processes alpaca fiber into batts, felt sheets, roving, and yarn — both on cones and in skeins — using wool from its own herd. The mill also processes llama, mohair, angora, and select other natural fibers. Yarn produced at the farm includes a range of natural colors alongside hand-dyed and hand-painted options.
