Laila Yom Tov is my first Kanaani cat and, without question, the cat closest to my heart.
She was born to Arbuz and Haifa and came to the United States in June 2025 when she was just two and a half months old. From the moment she arrived, she became a very special part of my life.
Her original name, Laila, means “night” in Hebrew because she was born at night. Later, during a difficult health challenge, a rabbi suggested giving her a second name, Yom Tov. “Yom” means “day,” creating a beautiful balance between night and day. Since then, she has been known as Laila Yom Tov.
Laila grew up among Scottish cats, which helped shape her gentle and friendly personality. At the same time, she displays many of the elegant qualities of the Kanaani breed: intelligence, curiosity, athleticism, and grace. She is beautiful, affectionate, and deeply connected to her human family.
One of the defining moments in her life came when she developed pyometra while still very young. I took her to Cornell University Veterinary Hospital, where the reproductive medicine specialists worked hard to save both her health and her future breeding potential. Thanks to their expertise and dedication, Laila recovered successfully. I remain deeply grateful to the Cornell team for giving her that chance.
I hope that one day Laila will have kittens of her own and help continue the preservation of this rare Israeli breed. But whether she becomes a mother or not, it will never change how much she means to me. She is, and always will be, my beloved girl.
As part of a rare breed preservation program, Laila Yom Tov represents the next generation of the Israeli Kanaani cat.
