Illini’s Work of Art, better known as Artie, is a Reserve Champion Wild Card Harlequin Appaloosa whose name could not fit him better. We added Artie to our program shortly after his birth, and he has matured into a strong, boxy male with a wide chest, substantial bone, heavy coverage, and bright, soft fleece from head to toe. His easygoing personality is an added bonus to the phenotype and fleece qualities that first caught our attention.
Artie’s color has continued to evolve as he has matured. He began with a speckled nose, mottled topknot, dark chin, dramatic white front legs, and markings ranging through beige, fawn, brown, grey, black, and white. Following shearing, many of his rose-grey areas darkened while the mottling and contrasting pattern remained. That continued color change is part of what makes Artie such an interesting example of the Wild Card phenotype within the Harlequin Appaloosa family.
His pedigree is just as interesting as his phenotype. Artie’s dam, Illini’s Pippi, is a daughter of Vintage Peruvian Confetti, one of the historic patterned alpacas documented in our Appy Archives. His sire, Illini’s Deuce’s Wild, descends from SA Peruvian Black Epic, another important line in our ongoing Appy Origins research. Together, those branches bring multiple generations of patterned genetics into a modern Wild Card Harlequin Appaloosa male.
Artie earned a Reserve Championship and five blue ribbons in halter competition before joining our breeding lineup. As he begins the next stage of his career, we are especially interested in what his combination of phenotype, fleece, evolving color, and documented patterned ancestry will contribute to the Elderwood breeding program.
