Excelsior’s Patriotic Spirit helped shape the Appaloosa and Harlequin breeding program at Elderwood Farms in Millington, Tennessee. Although Spirit has been sold, his genetic line remains firmly represented through retained offspring and another generation of spotted cria. We had a hard time parting with this boy, and his descendants remind us why!

During his time here, we appreciated Spirit’s masculine presence, strong conformation, and tremendous fleece density. His show career began as a mature male, when judges commented on his fleece brightness and the handle he had maintained with age. He earned four first-place ribbons, including wins in both halter and fleece at the 2018 AOA National Show.

Notable Genetic Lines:

• Windspun WSA Patriotic Gentleman - Spirit’s Appaloosa sire, by Hobby Horse Farm Great Expectations, a son of SA Peruvian Black Epic.
• Excelsior’s High Voltage Tazer - Spirit’s Harlequin Appaloosa dam, by NWA/Hearsum Paulo and out of Candlelight’s Cookies and Cream, a My Peruvian Zephyrus daughter and full sister to Mr. Butterscotch.

Notable Offspring:

• ELWD’s Without a Hitch - Retained Appaloosa herdsire; 8x Blue and second place in both halter and walking fleece at the 2025 AOA National Show.
• Elderwood’s Maybe It Was Memphis - Harlequin Appaloosa; 11x Blue including Nationals, and dam of Appaloosa Elderwood’s Bonanza.
• ELWD’s Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong - Harlequin Appaloosa; 1x Blue.
• ELWD’s When September Ends - Lightly spotted Appaloosa; 3x Blue. Produced an Appaloosa daughter by Epic X Celestial Cygnus in 2026.
• Elderwood’s Right on the Dot - Appaloosa daughter out of a three-banner-winning fawn female.
• Elderwood’s Lady Lyberty - Harlequin Appaloosa.

Seeing Spirit’s daughters produce spotted offspring and his son Hitch join our herdsire lineup gives us plenty to be excited about. For breeders interested in these established patterned genetic lines, his descendants offer a continuing connection to the breeding work we have developed at Elderwood.
