Unknown Variety

Unknown variety zebrafish are Danio rerio whose variety name has been lost or was never supplied. They may be ordinary striped wild type fish, pale golden or albino forms, spotted leopard fish, longfins, or transgenic fluorescent aquarium lines, but a quick visual check does not always reveal the full background. This label is common for donated classroom fish, mixed store stock, and home-bred groups where color names were not tracked. It should not be confused with an undescribed species.

Management starts with confirming they are healthy zebrafish rather than trying to assign a precise variety. Keep them in a group in a covered tank, with moderate current and clean water. Offer small foods they can swallow easily. Because unknown variety fish may carry hidden genes, planned breeding should be kept separate from named lines unless the goal is a mixed colony. Never release surplus zebrafish; rehome them through aquarists, schools, or facilities that can keep them contained.
