Mixed Variety

Mixed variety zebrafish are groups of Danio rerio that combine more than one aquarium or laboratory form, rather than a single named strain. A tank may include wild type striped fish alongside golden, albino, leopard, longfin, or fluorescent GloFish lines where those are legally sold. All are the same small danionin fish from South Asian freshwater habitats, but their color, fin length, and genetic background can vary widely. In research settings, mixed variety fish are unsuitable for studies that require a defined strain or pedigree.

In aquariums they are active schooling fish that do best in groups with open swimming room, a secure lid, and stable, clean water in the cool-to-warm tropical range. Fine flake, micro pellets, and small frozen or live foods are readily taken. Breeding is easy because adults scatter eggs and do not guard them, so fry survival is highest in a separate breeding setup. Longfin and fluorescent varieties may need more caution with fin nippers, strong currents, or local rules on sale and release.

Colors: Albino, Glofish, Golden, Leopard, Longfin, Wild Type
