Zebra Hybrid
Equus × zebra
A zebra hybrid is the offspring of a zebra bred with another equine, most often a horse or donkey. These animals may show striping strongest on the legs, neck, or face, along with body shape and size influenced by the non-zebra parent. Names such as zorse, zonkey, and zedonk are informal descriptions rather than true species names, and fertility is usually limited because the parents have different chromosome counts.
Human care for zebra hybrids requires realistic expectations. They are not simply striped domestic horses or donkeys, and many retain strong flight responses, defensive kicking, and handling challenges associated with zebra ancestry. Secure fencing, experienced equine handlers, careful hoof and dental care, and low-stress training are important. Breeding is generally a specialist or exhibition choice, not a routine livestock practice, and records should make parentage clear so future owners understand temperament and management needs.
