Zebra Donkey/Zonkey
Equus zebra x Equus asinus
A zebra donkey, commonly called a zonkey or zedonk, is a hybrid between a zebra and a domestic donkey. The listing name uses mountain zebra crossed with donkey, but the same everyday terms are also applied to crosses involving plains or Grevy's zebras. Most are produced from a zebra stallion and a donkey mare. The result usually has a donkey-like frame and ears with zebra striping on the legs, shoulders, face, or along the body, depending on the parents. Because zebra and donkey chromosome numbers differ, these hybrids are generally sterile.
Zonkeys are rare and are kept mainly in private exotic collections, educational farms, sanctuaries, and occasional zoo settings rather than as working donkeys. Good management treats them as exotic equids: high secure fencing, double gates, strong handling facilities, hoof and dental care, vaccinations, parasite control, and a forage-based diet that avoids obesity. Many retain a zebra's quick flight response and defensive kick, so casual pet handling is unsafe. Local permits, transport rules, and welfare questions need review before any breeding or purchase.
