Yellow Pond Turtle
Mauremys mutica
The yellow pond turtle is an egg-laying freshwater turtle of southern China, northern Vietnam and neighboring East Asian islands. Its smooth oval brown shell and yellowish head with a dark eye stripe distinguish it from many darker pond turtles. Specialist hobby and conservation collections provide clean aquatic space, dry basking areas, shelter and nesting ground.
Mauremys mutica is distinct from the red-necked and Chinese pond turtles. Captive hybrid turtles can resemble it, so scientific identity and provenance should be recorded.
