Yellow-Spotted Monitor
Varanus panoptes
The yellow-spotted monitor inhabits open woodland, grassland and other habitats in northern and western Australia and southern New Guinea. It has a long neck, strong digging claws and a dark body patterned with yellow spots and bands. Also called the Argus monitor, it is kept and bred by specialist monitor keepers.
Housing needs substantial floor space, deep diggable substrate, multiple basking opportunities and cooler refuges; aggression requires careful separation planning. It eats animal prey and lays eggs. CITES Appendix II regulates international trade.
