Yellow-Spotted Amazon River Turtle
Podocnemis unifilis
The yellow-spotted Amazon river turtle is a large egg-laying freshwater side-necked turtle of northern South America and the Amazon basin. Juveniles and adult males retain yellow head spots, while adult females lose most of them; the oval shell darkens with age. Public aquariums and specialist turtle collections provide extensive swimming water and suitable dry nesting banks.
Podocnemis unifilis is listed under the US ESA and regulated by CITES. Its adult size and legal status call for documented origin and specialist facilities.
