Yacare Caiman
Caiman yacare
The yacare caiman is an egg-laying crocodilian of the Paraguay basin and neighboring wetlands in southern South America, including the Pantanal. It has an armored olive-brown body, a relatively narrow snout and conspicuous dark spots along the lower jaw. Specialist zoological facilities provide secure water, dry banks, nesting space and adult crocodilian containment.
It is listed as threatened under the US ESA and regulated by CITES; possession and movement can require permits. It is distinct from the broad-snouted caiman.
