Unclassified Variety
An unclassified variety of x-ray tetra is best understood as a record label for Pristella maxillaris when the color form has not been identified. The species is a small schooling tetra from northern South America, recognized by its translucent x-ray body, colored tail base, and striped dorsal and anal fins. Aquarium strains include ordinary wild-type fish and gold or pale forms, but an unclassified entry should not be read as a separate breed or guaranteed morph.
For buyers and keepers, the practical step is to look at the actual fish rather than rely on the label. A group should be kept in numbers, in a covered freshwater aquarium with gentle to moderate filtration and tankmates that will not nip or swallow them. They are easy feeders and scatter eggs among fine plants or spawning mops. If color matters for a breeding project, record the parent stock before mixing them with other x-ray tetra forms.
