Unknown Strain

An unknown strain whiteleg shrimp is Penaeus vannamei whose genetic source, hatchery line, or selection history cannot be verified. The label may appear on commodity post-larvae, farmed juveniles, or broodstock that changed hands without complete records. Unknown strain does not mean a different species; it means the shrimp should not be assumed to be specific pathogen free, fast growing, or selected for any particular disease or salinity trait.

Using unknown-strain shrimp adds uncertainty to farm planning. Sensible management includes quarantine where practical, PCR health checks, conservative stocking densities, and comparison against a known batch before expanding production. They are poor candidates for a serious breeding program unless their offspring are evaluated and records are rebuilt. As with all whiteleg shrimp, escape prevention and responsible disposal of water and mortalities help protect local waterways and farms.
