Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain whiteleg shrimp is Penaeus vannamei that has not been matched to a named commercial line, hatchery family, or selective-breeding program. This can happen when post-larvae are sold through intermediaries, broodstock records are incomplete, or a farm maintains its own population without formal genetic labeling. The term does not identify a color morph; whiteleg shrimp may look clear, gray, greenish, or bluish depending on age, feed, and water conditions.
Treat unclassified stock as generic vannamei until testing and farm results say otherwise. Buyers should ask for health screening, source history, and any data on growth, survival, feed conversion, and salinity range. For hatcheries, keeping batches separate and recording crosses prevents an unclassified group from contaminating selected lines. Farms may still use such shrimp successfully, but biosecurity and performance monitoring matter more when the genetic background is vague.
