Mixed Strain
A mixed strain whiteleg shrimp is Penaeus vannamei stock carrying ancestry from more than one hatchery, family, or selection program. The species, also called Pacific white shrimp, is native to the eastern Pacific coast of Latin America and is now one of the main farmed shrimp worldwide. Mixed strains may be created intentionally to combine growth rate, survival, salinity tolerance, or specific disease-resistance traits, but color differences are not dependable proof of strain.
Farm value depends on records and performance, so a mixed strain should be described by its source, health status, and production results rather than a vague label. Hatcheries and farms usually manage these shrimp through biosecure broodstock, tested post-larvae, controlled stocking densities, aeration, and feed programs matched to water quality. Mixing lines without tracking can make selection harder and may hide disease susceptibility, so small trials are useful before large pond or tank stockings.
