White Cockatoo

Cacatua alba

The White Cockatoo, scientifically known as Cacatua alba, is a striking bird native to the lush rainforests of the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. This medium-sized species, measuring approximately 45 centimeters (18 inches) in length, is easily recognized by its predominantly white plumage, a striking contrast to its vivid sulfur-yellow underwing and tail feathers. One of its most captivating features is its prominent, erectile crest, which can be raised to express various emotions. These intelligent and social birds are known for their playful and affectionate nature, often forming strong bonds with both their flock and human caretakers in captivity. White Cockatoos have a powerful beak that they use not only for cracking nuts and seeds but also for climbing and playful interaction. Vocal and highly communicative, these birds can mimic human speech and other environmental sounds. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade, the White Cockatoo is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, prompting conservation efforts to ensure its survival in the wild.
