Western Twist-Neck Turtle
Platemys platycephala
The twist-necked turtle is an egg-laying side-necked turtle of northern South America and the Amazon region. Its flattened brown shell often carries two low ridges, while an orange or yellow crown contrasts with the darker head and neck. It uses shallow forest pools, streams and damp terrestrial shelter.
Specialist turtle collections provide clean shallow water, accessible land and plentiful cover. Platemys platycephala is distinct from the long-necked Chelodina turtles; its common name describes the side-folding neck.
