Western Gaboon Viper
Bitis rhinoceros
The western Gaboon viper is a live-bearing forest viper of West Africa. It has a very heavy body with geometric brown, cream and dark markings, a broad head and conspicuous paired nasal horns. It is distinct from the eastern Gaboon viper, which has smaller nasal projections and different facial markings.
Specialist venomous-snake facilities provide secure terrestrial housing with shelter and controlled conditions. Its venom is medically significant, and possession can require dangerous-animal permits and professional containment.
