Unknown Strain

Unknown-strain waxworms are greater wax moth larvae, Galleria mellonella, sold or maintained without a known colony source. They may come from a feeder supplier, a bait shop, a laboratory surplus culture, or a restarted home colony. Most are wild-type in appearance, with creamy white to tan or gold larvae and small brown adult moths after pupation. Since the strain history is absent, traits such as growth rate, disease resistance, adult emergence, and final larval size should be treated as batch-specific.

Practical management is the same as for other waxworms: keep them contained, dry, and ventilated, and slow development with cool storage if they are being held for feeding. They are useful for adding variety or calories to insectivore diets, but frequent use can unbalance feeding plans. Anyone breeding unknown-strain waxworms should cull moldy cultures promptly and separate fresh stock from old containers. Secure disposal matters, especially around apiaries, because escaped greater wax moths are pests of stored comb and weak colonies.
