Viperine Water Snake
Natrix maura
The viperine water snake is an egg-laying freshwater snake of southwestern Europe and northwestern Africa. Its keeled brown or olive body often bears a dark zigzag, creating a superficial resemblance to a viper, but it has round pupils and lacks viper fangs. Specialist collections provide clean aquatic space, accessible land and secure shelter appropriate to its fish- and amphibian-feeding life. Natrix maura is distinct from the dice and grass snakes; its viperlike defensive appearance does not make it a dangerously venomous species.
