Variable Platyfish
Xiphophorus variatus
The variable platyfish is a freshwater livebearer native to eastern Mexico. Captive strains vary in color, but hybrid platies should not automatically be assigned to this species. Keep verified stock in a planted aquarium with stable water conditions, swimming space and a varied diet that includes plant material. Females give birth to live fry, which benefit from dense cover. Preserve parentage and species identity when planning breeding lines.
