Utila Spiny-Tailed Iguana
Ctenosaura bakeri
The Utila spiny-tailed iguana is native to Utila, an island off Honduras, where it is strongly associated with mangroves. Adults have grey to brown coloration, a dorsal crest and a long tail with spiny rings. Conservation programs maintain and breed it in managed collections.
Housing must support climbing and secure retreats, with basking opportunities and nesting provision following the species' management guidelines. It eats mainly plant material, with some animal foods, and lays eggs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
