Unknown Strain
Unknown strain turbot is a record label for Scophthalmus maximus whose breeding background cannot be verified. It may describe market fish, transferred juveniles, broodstock acquired without paperwork, or samples from an older aquaculture lot. Turbot themselves are high-bodied marine flatfish that settle on the seabed after larval metamorphosis, with both eyes on the upper side and a mottled skin that blends into sand or gravel. The unknown label is not a recognized strain and does not predict color, size, or performance by itself.
For farms, laboratories, and public aquaria, uncertain provenance limits how the fish can be used. It may be suitable for grow-out or display, but it is weak evidence for selective-breeding trials, conservation comparisons, or disease-resistance claims. Managers normally keep source notes, quarantine new stock, and avoid mixing unknown fish into named broodlines unless the genetic risk is acceptable. Practical care remains that of turbot: cool marine water, smooth bottom space, careful feeding of marine diets, and low-stress grading because flatfish can be damaged by rough handling.
