Timber Rattlesnake
Crotalus horridus
The timber rattlesnake is a live-bearing pit viper of eastern North America. Adults have a heavy keeled body with dark crossbands or chevrons on a yellowish, gray or brown ground and a dark tail ending in a segmented rattle. Natural melanistic animals also occur. Specialist venomous-snake collections provide secure terrestrial housing with retreats and a controlled thermal gradient. Its venom is medically significant, and possession can require dangerous-animal permits; native collection restrictions also vary by jurisdiction.
